The post where Angie takes a stand and loses half her readers (and gets a big Heck Yeah! from the other half)

So this post at Meg’s the other day (Hi, Meg!) made me realize I wanted to speak on this issue.

I am a Conservative. I am a Republican. I am a Christian. I believe in Absolute Truth. I believe in the Bible as the written and perfect word of God. It is upon those beliefs that I base my life. It is upon those beliefs, that I have stances and opinions about controversial and socially relevant topics. The other day at church, our pastor did a message on Elijah. Elijah was a great and powerful prophet of God during a day when the Jews were on the fence about Yahweh-God. Jezebel had helped put forth Baal as god and the Jews were getting confused on the subject. 1 Kings 18:21 "Elijah went before the people and said, 'How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.' But the people said nothing." Silence is not something I feel I can live with. I am called not to be silent, so I choose to speak today on my beliefs on certain issues.

Like these:

Jesus. I believe Jesus is the Son of God. I believe He came to this earth to better help us understand the Father God and to help us find a way to God because we as humans were “missing it.” He fulfilled many prophecies and was crucified willingly for our sins. The Jews did not kill Christ. The Romans did not kill Christ. I killed Christ. I kill him a little every day with my sins. He died to save me from those sins so I could accept Him as God and some day spend eternity with Him in Heaven. I believe that anyone who rejects this will not go to heaven. I know MANY MANY MANY MANY (you get the point) people who do not accept this and I love those people and I am saddened that I will not see them in Heaven. I am sure they think I am as crazy as they are for believing this truth. There is no gray area on this for me. Hell is something that we have sort of glorified in our culture today – as a place where naughty things happen with hot fire and brimstone and pitchfork looking cherubs, but it is still fun. However, what I know about Hell is that it is total isolation and separation from God (aka anything good, pure, righteous, true, happy, loving) and is full of lies, deceit, anger, vengeance, and evil. I do not want to spend eternity there and nothing saddens me more than anyone who will. Nothing saddened Jesus more, either. He did not teach us to wish anyone there. He reprimanded his Apostles for wanting to strike down a city that did not welcome them. Reprimanded them because nothing saddens God more than the destruction of those who have not yet accepted his Truth.

Homosexuality: I am not one of those “not that there’s anything wrong with that” kind of people when it comes to this. I believe it is wrong because the Bible tells me it is wrong. If you don’t follow the Bible, I don’t expect this to make any sense to you. I believe homosexuality is a choice. The same way that getting married or not is a choice. The same way that staying true or not true to that person is a choice. The same way that staying married or not married is a choice. All have their pros and cons and all are easy and hard in their own respects. Now, I have lots of choices and I sin daily, too, so I do not think homosexual people are evil, but I do think they are sinning. I do not hate them. I love the sinner; hate the sin just as I hate my own sins. I am not so naïve to think that some are not more prone to struggling with this. Just as some are more prone to dealing with addiction. Just as I am more prone to struggling with impatience, anger, and yelling. God does not hate me for that and does not teach anyone to hate me for it either. God does not hate gays and lesbians. God loves us all equally. He does not love the black man more or less than the white man. God does not love the pastor more or less than the homosexual. Why would I? Just because I am against homosexuality and I voice that, WHY OH WHY would anyone think I am a hater? If anyone calls me a hater for this, then I respond in one of two ways 1) You obviously don’t know me because I don’t hate anyone for what they do or 2) You must be a hater, too, if you feel the need to say such things about me for having an opinion contrary to yours. If someone says I am close-minded, my response is that they are then equally as close-minded for thinking I am wrong and shouldn’t voice my opinion. What frightens me the most about this issue is that people who have contrary opinions to homosexuality are being labeled as haters and are slowly not being allowed to voice their opinions. I do not think it will be long before we are not allowed to voice this at all in some countries and I find that sad and socially repressive and frightening. I do not choose to avoid the topic of homosexuality altogether (if I watch any sort of network television I cant – Law and Order, CSI, ER, Scrubs, Earl, Office – it’s strewn throughout) and I do not choose to avoid gays and lesbians. I don’t know many, which is true. If I did, and I got along with the person and had things in common with the person, they may become my friend if they could handle that I had a belief contrary to theirs. I would hope they don’t hate me for having my beliefs just as I don’t hate them for having their lifestyle. I just think it is wrong. They think I am wrong. It is black and it is white for both sides.

Abortion. I think this one can be more summed up with some pictures. Meet Kevin at 8 weeks in-utero:

According to our laws and society, Kevin is not considered a human being with any rights at this stage. No, Kevin is an extension of his mother’s body and is her right and her choice, not her child. Kevin’s parents were 19 and 21 when he was conceived and unmarried. Kevin’s parents did not choose to view him as a choice, but as the life he was. They also chose to marry and parent. This is Kevin today at 38.

Does this look like a choice to you or a person? At what point in time from 6-8 weeks in-utero when Kevin could have been terminated to the point at which he was birthed, did he become a person and not an extension of his mother’s body – a choice? If Kevin’s parents had not chosen to give him life, Kevin would never be. Kevin’s 3 kids would never be.

Meet Andrew at 8 weeks in-utero.
Once again, according to our laws and our society, Andrew is not a human being with any basic rights yet, but rather an extension of his mother’s body with which she has any right to handle. Andrew’s parents were both 19 and unmarried when he was conceived. His father was an engineering student and his mother was working full time. Termination of the pregnancy was probably very tempting, however, his parents did not view the above as a choice or a right, but as life. Meet Andrew today at 19:

Andrew is studying Engineering at University of Kentucky. He graduated from high school with a 4.0 and was Valedectorian.

The mother and father that chose life for Kevin, happen to be my mom and dad. Kevin is my brother. The mother and father that chose life for Andrew happen to be Lisa and Kevin, my brother. Andrew is my nephew. If my parents had not chosen life, I would not have the brother I have. If Kevin and Lisa had not chosen life, I would not have my nephew, Andrew. If choice is the voice of reason, shouldn’t Kevin and Andrew have gotten a vote, too? I am going to go out on a limb and venture to guess that there are almost NO in utero babies that would vote for death over a chance for life. Once again this does not mean I hate anyone who has ever had an abortion, nor do I think I am any better. I sin DAILY. I believe abortion is a sin from which we can seek repentance and healing. But, God created every breathing human being differently and the Bible says he knew us when we were in the womb. That life in the womb should have the same basic human rights as those of us out of the womb.

So that about sums up my stand on some very hot topics of today. The reason this came about was because someone named Linda left a comment on Bossy’s post (which I admit grossed me out a bit) the other day stating she was not going to read anymore, she was finished, it just wasn’t worth it anymore. I have no idea what her reasons were. If they were because of a difference of beliefs, then what is so wrong with that? Something tells me if the shoe were dropped differently and Bossy wrote something ultra-conservative and upset some liberals and they said they would stop reading, it wouldn’t have been so controversial and would be considered open-minded and logical. I find a huge double standard in this type of logic and with a lot of liberal beliefs. If you tell me to get the corncob out of my ass from my conservatism, then I will laugh first, toast you with my red wine and tell you to put a band-aid on your bleeding heart from liberalism. I do not consider myself better than you and I hope you don’t consider yourself better than me. We are all equals in the playing field of life.

That being said, many if not most, of the blogs I read regularly are uber-liberal. These people have become my friends and my acquaintances. I find them witty, insightful and hilarious. I find them encouraging and inspirational as well. I love reading Bossy. I love reading Mrs. G, and KatyDidNot and Jenn and Meg, just to name a few, even though I know their political and spiritual beliefs are about as far to the left as I am to the right. I could stop reading them based on this, just as I am sure there will be many that stop reading me based on this today. However, I don’t choose to live in a bubble. I am firm enough in my beliefs to be able to look past and keep reading for the parts that entertain me and inspire me. There are many that are not, though. Either way, is that so wrong?

Anyone left?

    A to the MEN!!!!

    Totally agree!

I just so happen to have a few homosexual friends. They know full well on where I stand, but that doesn't mean we can't be friends.

I just don't get how some people can expect people to understand the love of Christ when all they're doing is trying to shove Him down their throats in a hollier than thou way. Yeah, that'll work. Those people would be the prime reason Mr. Smoochiefrog didn't become a Christian until he was almost 30.

    Have a great weekend!

  5. Another choice...to read or not to read. When people get all offended and leave hateful comments, I'm just thinking, stop reading. Stop coming back. There are tons of people who don't agree with everything someone else believes...if you don't want to 'hear' it...DON'T READ IT!!

Angie, this is a great post...I think you are right on!! It's awesome that you were bold enough to put it out there. Great job!

  6. You did good.

I do wish that Bossy would post something ultra-conservative and just see what happened. I would find that really funny--probably the aftermath more then the post.

I will say the same thing to you that I said to Meg. Quite frankly I don't agree with anyone. I haven't found anyone out with whom I always agree.

I think that the fact that we are free to discuss this and whatever else we want is what is amazing. I love the discussion. I love laughing and I don't even mind a little cringing.

  8. HRH (Holly),

It would be HILARIOUS to see the aftermath of a Bossy or Mrs G. conservative post. You are right. What would be even funnier, would be to see how they could possibly word it. I don't think their fingers would allow them to type such things. I love reading them both, so I don't say that in an offensive manner, just a funny one.

  9. I'm still here!! I consider myself liberal...but you are a female version of my husband. I was raised in a strict catholic household and grew up pretty much creating my own faith and relationship with God. Pat called it the "Bible according to Kathy" and I reluctantly learned that this is not ok. We finally found a church that brings me to tears 70% of the time I am there, and yet I come up with lots of excuses not to go...I'm a work in progress. I admire you for coming forward and saying what you have to say, even if I don't agree with it all.

    You haven't shaken this reader!!

  10. Angie this post was great! It was clear and unapologetic yet unoffensive. Maybe since I lean towards being a conservative I am not offended as easily by those statements... but I think you did a great job... and I am still here, not going anywhere :-)

  11. Delurking to say great post. I happen to share the same beliefs that you do, but I still would read even if I disagreed. I read many bloggers whose opinions are way to the left of mine. It's not unconditional agreement that I'm looking for.

It's human emotion, life stories, funny outtakes. It's life in all it's varying and messy degrees that make me laugh, cry, get outraged or just really think. To close myself off from that would shrink my world immeasurably.

    Again, great post.

Hey there. I didn't realize the Bossy comment situation, I had to go read again. When Bossy was in STL the conversation did turn to politics for a while. Tempered Woman and I were the 2 that spoke of being the "Big R"..
As I get older though I find myself more of a Liberal Conservative and I also have some gray areas in my religious believes. There are a couple points on your VERY WELL written and thoughtful post that I 100% disagree with.
I totally believe that people are born homosexual. I have quite a few people that I love both friends and family that are gay. I have seen the stuggle and pain in admitting this. Being straight is easy. (just as my divorced cousin who is now happy with his partner).
I also do not believe that if you do not believe in Jesus that you will not go to heaven. On the final day when we meet God..I believe we meet God, the Muslims me Mohammed ETC. I think that good people will be with their maker and evil will be in hell. Am I making up my own religion. Yeah..but right now it's working for me.
As a 41 year old adopted woman I am super glad that I was conceived BEFORE Roe V Wade...I wasn't a choice, I was an accident and problem and I was "taken care of" and have new parents... so I'm with you there sister.

I find that many of my internet friends are people that I may have been friends w/ in real life. I respect their beliefs, most aren't looking for a fight..as you weren't by this post today. Sometimes I look away or just choose not to comment. Unlike you sometimes I'm cool w/ being silent.

Have a super Memorial Day weekend.
    xoxo

  14. Yup MP, I see where you are coming from. I respect your right to say it and I am glad you feel comfy to say it here.

I agree that coming out and admitting you are gay is HARD. I also think it is HARD to not sin, but takes effort and choices. I use that as a parallel, not as an analogy - meaning gay people are NOT bad. I just see it as a choice and a struggle and difficult one at that. Yes, I think there are some that are born with tendancies that they will CONSTANTLY struggle with and that is not fair. Just as Brian having cancer is not fair and something we constantly have to struggle with. It is our cross to bear and rise above in any way we can.

I can't understand the logic on the "meet each maker" comment too much though because that would be to insinuate we all have different makers and there are multiple afterlifes. That would be a poly-theist philosophy and I cannot get on board with that because the Bible (which I believe in) teaches me something completely different.

    Thanks for your heartfelt comment.

  15. Just like I would not stop reading you because our views are completely different. I like you in the blogosphere and I'm sure I would like you in real-life.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love you, but as you already know, I ABSOLUTELY disagree with you on everything you wrote.

Having said that, I don't think you're a hater because you disagree with homosexuality. I think it's discriminatory to not allow homosexuals to marry or want them to have the full rights and privileges of other human beings. Simply because of their sexual orientation.

I don't belive in God, but I do belive in people. And that all people, regardless of race, creed, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or any other "differentiating" factor, are equal and should be treated as such. And that all people should be treated with respect and kindness and good will. And honor.

    And Vagina isn't a bad word. :0)

I believe that the bible was written by people who were trying to lead, to make change and to give people something to believe in. I believe that people believe whole-heartedly in the bible because they need something to belive in. To help them make sense of the world. To give them something to work towards. I also believe that this is why people believe in science and evolution and the power of nature simply being the power of nature. The creation of the Earth being an awesome example of the that power. The good of people simply being the good in people. The good and bad choices people make simply being that...the good and bad choices WE make. I believe in giving MYSELF credit for my mistakes and my achievements.

I belive that when I die, because I lived a good life and was a good person, that I'll be rewarded for that. I'm not sure how, but I believe in it. I don't believe in the pearly gates or God being there to check "yes" or "no" on my entrance ticket. It makes me sad (for you)to think that you belive that even though your friends are good people that we'll spend our eternity in Hell, just becuase we don't believe in your God.

I think I might just cut and paste this and put it into a post of my own!

Having said that, I'm here today and I'll be here tomorrow. Because regardless of your views on religion or some social issues, I still adore you and will always care what you have to say, even if I don't agree with it.

And can I say that I think it's really funny that the light switch is what I thought would possibly get people riled up? Boy...I was wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  25. And also...ALSO? If any liberal stops reading you because this post, then they need to pull the stick out of their ass. K? Thanks. Mwah.

    ReplyDelete
  26. HIJACK WARNING!! (sorry) (No I'm not. I could have shortened this but I felt the need to say...)

While I, personally, don't believe that most homosexuality is a choice because I've known way too many kids whose parents did everything they could to "change" them, I, like you, respect everyone's right to believe as they choose.

Regarding abortion - Meet ME. If abortion had been legal in the 50s, I wouldn't be here today. And even from the vantage point of looking back on a lifetime of pain and repeated bouts of hell on earth, I would STILL choose to be here. I have value. I have experience to offer that others can only imagine and would never want to live through themselves. I am grateful for my life, warts and all. Yet I do not hate my surrogate daughters who chose abortions. I held them while they cried over the loss. One, I held while she fell apart after the birth of her second child and realized what she'd lost by aborting the first.

I personally think there's a special place in hell for doctors who perform partial birth abortions and for anyone who sactions it. But that is my opinion and I won't be ugly to them because they think differently. I may pray for God to strike them dead during their next procedure, but I won't be ugly. Oh, wait - now I'M hearing those crickets! ;o)

Thank you for honestly sharing your opinions. It takes more courage to do that than being a fence sitter. BRAVO FOR YOU!

    Angie.....you are frickin' AWESOME!
And...you have some awesome liberal friends. Can we just use the word liberal and quit using this stupid word 'progressive'. I mean, come on. Who are we kidding here? ;-)
You know that I agree with you on everything you said, but more than that, I'm proud of you. I don't read a ton of liberal blogs, but maybe I should broaden my horizon. I find that most of your/my/anyone's blog readers tend to read b/c the blog has something that is different from what they see in their daily life. IF you share from your heart, you can't go wrong.

ANd I agree, it is frightening the double standard in this country. It's called CLOSED-MINDEDNESS. Also, look up the word 'dhimmitude'. You'll be a little scared.
    Love ya.

  28. Meg, Based on this mentality of "discriminatory for homosexuals not to have basic rights as other human beings," (Which I am not saying gays are not entitled to basic human rights - just marriage) what about the unborn??? Where are their rights? Is a baby a baby just before it is about to come out of his mother's womb, but a fetus and part of his mother just a few weeks prior? Where does life begin and where does it have the right to survive? Who can define that, then? That I DO NOT GET.

Also, the "good enough," I am so glad that my savior died for me, so I never have to be good enough. I strive to be a better person because of what he did for me, but I can't get to heaven on my own. I need to believe in Jesus - He made it THAT EASY for me. He made it that EASY for everyone. The sad part is when we think it has to be that hard to be "good enough." How good is good enough. I would spend my whole life worried that I was not being "good enough." What is the standard? What about the child abuser that is a good teacher and civil leader? What about the good paster that is not a good parent? What about the great dad who makes decisions at work that negatively affect others? How good is good enough?

    KEEP BELIEVING

Out of curiousity, do you ever find it hard to be a republican and a Christian at the same time? What with the torture, absolute contempt for the poor, institutionalized racism and so on.

Stated another way, what do you think Jesus would have thought about the Republican Party of this era? I'm no fan of the current crop of Dems either, but I think the GOP would look at someone like Jesus and call him a liberal freak.

  30. It's always interesting to learn more about a blogger!

I'm going to ditto what Leanne said: "I may not totally agree with everything you said. BUT I totally agree with your right to say it!"

    ReplyDelete
  31. First, before I begin typing fast, let me just say that I agree with what Becca said about how I would defend with my last breath your right to speak your opinions. Even though I don't agree with them.

The difference between the two camps--those who believe gay people should be allowed to marry, and those who don't--really comes down to exclusion vs. inclusion. Whereas liberal thought seeks to include everyone, conservatives aim to exclude those who don't live their lives as conservatives see as right.

I'm not talking about the religious applications here--whether someone will be saved or not. I'm an atheist, and don't claim to know what happens after death (who does, really?).

But conservatives apply a religious brand to a human issue, and that isn't okay in my book.

Please don't be offended, but I think you made an error in stating your case, in the comment where you said "I agree that coming out and admitting you are gay is HARD." ARE gay. Then later, "gay people." Not people who choose to act as homosexuals. People who ARE homosexuals.

Whether or not a person is homosexual is as natural as having blue eyes or curly hair or a penchant for wide hips or long legs. Pale skin, or dark. If your god created us all, which I don't believe, are you saying he made some people flawed in that way? In such a way, that if we all believed as you do, would create a life of heartbreak because the way they love would be forbidden? I could never believe in a god like that.

One huge problem I have with some religions is their arrogance. The way a group says "We know the truth. We are right. Everyone else is wrong. Follow us." Not just Christianity. And to say that only Christians who believe in that religion's god are the only people who will have eternal life after death? Again, it excludes. There are beautiful ways to practice one's spirituality (or lack of it), but organized religion often muddies the waters.

I don't hope to change your mind, any more than it's possible for you to change mine. The debate is important, though, if we all hope to shape our society in a way that takes everyone's opinions into account. I'm not an eloquent debater by any means, and I hope I haven't offended you (or hijacked your comments!). I really, really admire you for opening up the conversation here and welcoming anyone, with any opinion.

  40. Angie, thanks for this great piece. I couldn't agree with you more and am so glad Pinky directed me here.
As for the homosexual thing and one of the posters, the difference is that we are informed to never HATE a gay person, or ANY person; MANY of them HATE us for OUR opinions, though.
And yes, your brother and nephew weren't Amana refrigerators before they were born. Why is it that the liberals will screech "LIFE SUPPORT" when a child leaves the womb with a problem..1" from the womb. But, 1" INSIDE, it's "get the knife ,it's inconvenient"?

What's hard to explain to non religious people is how important our faith is and how it has to motivate us in our politics and cultural choices or we'd be morons of little faith at all. What's the point?

God bless you and all your posters here. It takes BIG guts to have written this, I'm sad to say. It shouldn't in a country founded on Christian principles, huh? We're very off course. We need to start SPEAKING OUT.

Thanks for the great start, Angie!

  41. I found your blog because of Pinky... I loved it. I totally agree with you. It makes me sad to think people don't believe in God. And that they think the Bible is just another book. That is isn't the book of life. I love my Jesus and I sin allot. I try each day to live right but with 5 kids I am going to sin....yelling and losing my cool from time to time.. I agree is sinning. Thank you for speaking your mind. I am adding you to my favorite page. I will come back.....

  47. I'm here and I'm SO proud of you! This was fantastic.

I love Bossy. I really, really do. I think she's so funny, kind, insightful and downright brilliant. But, I have a hard time reading the ultra-liberal stuff. My husband likes to call me a conservative hippie, because where he won't read her blog anymore after that post, I will continue to read her. I may not agree with people, but I won't turn my back on them either.

  49. i admire your strength and courage to tackle such a heated topic.

it's so hard to not be seen as judgemental when referring to someone's lifestyle as a sin.

it's so difficult to explain the heart of Jesus... but i think you did it well.

  50. Hi Angie,

I'm just catching up after being out of town for a few days.

Although our beliefs are different, I think you are courageous to put your beliefs out there.

I come to read your blog, not because of a similarity in political or religious beliefs, but because of the incredible generosity of spirit you show on your blog in opening up about your journey with your husband's cancer.

From JCK, one of your other liberal heathen friends. ;)
