a litte of everything

Almost a potluck here today. June Cleaver Nirvana's Monday potlucks are one of my favorite reads. I love a little of everything.

First, I will let you know about life with my children. In the last week, Gavin broke his arm and diagnosed himself. I didn't believe him and life went on as usual for the next two days. Friday, Grant and I were driving by Gavin's school on our way home from our Friday errands and picked up Gavin from school. When he came out, we discovered he had lost his first tooth that day. Pretty exciting considering he is a freak about things like this (odd textures/funny feelings/healthy food in his mouth) and WOULD NOT work the tooth any looser. His teacher gave him a little baggy for it and I honestly think it is the smallest tooth I have ever seen in my life. Seriously.

Anyway, Memaw and Papa were coming the next day for a visit and he REALLY wanted to show it to them. He contemplated waiting until the next day to put it under his pillow. He decided to do it that night since he didn't know how to explain to the tooth fairy that he lost it that day but didn't put it under his pillow that night. How would she know when to come? How does she know? Anyway, the tooth fairy came and left a note telling Gavin she was leaving the first tooth so he could show it to Memaw and Papa. The tooth fairy also left him $5 explaining that a first tooth is special, but she does not give $5 for every tooth, to which Gavin retorted, "Hey mom, maybe I will get a $20 for the next tooth." The tooth fairy needs to be more specific. The next day, my parents came in town for a visit so Brian and I could celebrate our anniversary. Gavin aggravated his broken wrist and we went to the prompt care. Yes, broken. The next day, Gavin was supposed to take it easy on the wrist until we could get in to see the orthopaedic, so he went to a friend's house to play and we found him jumping in the bounce house when we picked him up. But, it was okay, because he wasn't jumping as high as usual. Just ask him. The next day, I spent over 20 minutes on the phone on 3 separate occasions with the orthopaedics office trying to get Gavin in. I was very patient and understanding of the wait and process because the doctor is a friend and I didn't really care when we got there. The scheduler was kind of rude to me the second time I called stating, " I have emailed his nurse and I WILL CALL YOU when she gets back to me." That was at noon. Afraid of aggravating her and never receiving a return phone call, I reluctantly called again at 4:30 assuming we wouldn't get in that day, but just wondering when or IF we could expect to get in the next day. Once again, I was just trying to see what comes next. This is new to me. Turns out the emailed nurse was out that day and the schedulers had been notified to use VOICEMAIL, and not email, so anyone could check it. They were very apologetic, but in the end, I really didn't care. I wasn't upset. It was a communication breakdown and stuff happens. So, we go the next day for a cast and Gavin chooses red for the Cardinals.

Peoria is about split on their Cardinals or Cubs adoration. Dr. M, who is a Cubs fan, almost refused to treat him. The nurse, who informed us her cat's name is Wrigley Field, threatened to change the color to blue, but Gavin's choice prevailed. I noticed lots of comments yesterday referenced his waterproof cast, so my condolences to those commenters who have ALSO obviously gone through broken bones to be such experts on cast types. Yes it is waterproof and the only restriction in Gavin's activity is that he is not allowed to hit his brother on the head with it. So far, so bad with that one. Gavin also informed me already yesterday that he hates it. 2 down, 19 more days to go. Tuesday night, we all went to Gavin's K-2 Spring program. It was cute, hot, crowded, uncomfortable, and too long - exactly like all kids musical programs. Perfect.

Me: I have started to jog OUTSIDE with the beautiful weather. We are contemplating putting in a patio in the back off the deck since we get so much wind and the deck is so full of splinters and just because I seem to get antsy with feeling I need to improve my house at least once a year. We are working on getting quotes, but cost might prohibit the project. I enjoyed visiting with my mom and dad for a few days and I took a long break from reading or commenting on blogs. Sorry, but only a little, because it was nice to enjoy life outside with my family. I got a deep freeze with my birthday money. This is to house the 1/4 cow we got from my parents for Christmas. It was fitting in our regular second fridge's freezer, but it is in our garage and also houses popcicles. Therefore, it gets opened A LOT in the hot months of the summer, and had a hard time staying efficient.

Brian: he is doing O-K. He doesn't feel great. He is a bit tired all the time. His stomach never feels quite right. Things taste slightly differently to him. He seems to be a bit slower than usual, but not dramatically. He has good and bad moments throughout the day. He is working, but goes in a bit later than normal. He does not sleep well. And he gets to start his next round of chemo again on Monday with no end to this in sight. Oh JOY!

That is about it. You bored yet?

  1. i like the red and miss the cardinals. don't let him stick anything down there either - you probably heard that one. Waterproof heard mixed things from my attendings about them. He will heal fast - that is why it is great treating kids. glad your back to running - you don't jog!:)

  2. Wow! You definitely haven't been bored, have you, Angie?!

I was thinking the tooth fairy note was great, then I read the "maybe next time the tooth fairy will being me $20!" Kids can find a loophole anywhere!

Gavin looks so cool in his red cast & cardinals shirt! :)

    Hugs!

  4. Angela, I know, jogging is such a dated word, but it seemed weird saying "I've been doing my daily runs outside" because it makes me sound like I have diarrhea. I don't. not that it matters, but what is it about diarrhea that makes you feel like you have done something wrong?

  6. Not bored - enthralled actually. What does that say about me? And is it bad that Brian being a little slow means maybe now I'll be able to beat him at Euchre? Just trying to look on the bright side.

  9. I guess there is never a dull moment in your house! lol I love this picture of your little guy - he's so handsome. I hope the tooth fairy comes tonight. Sometimes she forgets here.

I hope Brian is doing okay. As for you and your "runs" maybe the running angel will meet up with you during a run! Have a great night! =)

  11. I personally loved the "tooth fairy needs to be more specific". I will remember that when our first tooth comes out.

Glad to hear that you are doing something for you, and that you had such a great time with your parents. Finding time for Mama is often hard some days.

  12. Ahhh...the tooth fairy. S"HE" (sounding suspiciously like my Step-dad) called a niece when she lost her first tooth. From that point on, it was expected that the tooth fairy would call for EVERY TOOTH for her AND her sister. I thing S"HE" still calls. Begrudgingly.

The tooth fairy needs to be MUCH MORE SPECIFIC.

And, OH! I forgot I'm typing a blog post right now...guess I should get back to it!

  20. Hey, "a little of everything" is perfect...isn't a blog a little like a web based journal?
Great post. Tooth Fairies have been known to be a day or so late around here. Seems (S)He likes to leave those cool Dollar Coins and doesn't always have them "in stock". Especially when a tooth is lost at 7pm on a Friday night!
    Blessings & Peace!

  21. Hi Angie! I love the red cast however if you are keeping count, I am a HUGE Cubs fan. And congrats on the losing of the tooth... I just bought Austin's 5 year old niece Sara a book called Throw My Tooth on the Roof. It was about all the different traditions people have around the world when they lose their teeth. So cute. :) Happy Weekend to you and your lovely family.

  22. You're never boring and I love the red cast.

I never remember to leave money for the tooth fairy any more. Last week for my youngest daughter eldest daughter took money out of her babysitting stash and did it for the fairy. Bad bad Mommy.

  23. Wow! Quite a potluck! Good for you on the jogging! Kids are amazing with broken limbs - bouncing in the bounce house, but it's OK because he didn't jump AS HIGH as he usually does... too funny.

  24. You couldn't bore me if you tried! ;o)

Hang in there, sweetie. I hope you are doing something to take care of yourself while all this is going on. How about an update on your "me" time/personal sanity maintenance activities?

  25. Oh I love me a good potluck! I also love the tooth next to the yardstick...very nice touch. It is tiny! Yes, the toothfairy needs to be much more specific. Maybe even writing out a payout schedule with interest, etc. Too funny. Glad you are enjoying the outside. Too bad for Brian with the tasting thing. That is just yucky. Will be thinking and praying tomorrow...

  26. You know the only thing I don't like about you is that you are a Cardinals fan. But I'll let that slide, because you are one AMAZING woman!
